History of Bukit Batok
Bukit Batok is a residential estate that is located in the western part of Singapore. It is surrounded by Old Jurong Road in the east, PIE in the south, Bukit Batok Road in its west, and Choa Chu Kang Road in the north.
Bukit Batok area covers 1,104 ha split into nine zones; Brickworks, Hong Kah, Hillview, Gombak, Guilin, Bukit Batok Central, Bukit Batok South, Bukit Batok West and Bukit Batok East. Currently, the Bukit Batok area is a residential estate that hosts private and public houses, industrial estates and all basic amenities.
The name Bukit Batok has many meanings depending on the various languages. In Malay, Bukit is a hill, and Batok means cough. The explanation might refer to the sounds caused by explosives from the granite quarry that existed or the cold air that caused coughs. And according to Javanese, Batok means coconut in their language, which filled the region in the past years. The Chinese version purports that since the hills are filled with solid granite, which is Batu in Malay, hence the reason for the name Batok.
The present Bukit Batok Nature Reserve was a popular landscape in the early days. It was marked by war memorials Syonan Chereito which was built to remember Japanese soldiers who died during the 1940s war. On the other end was a British memorial wooden cross that was also a dedication to soldiers. The war memorials were knocked down by the Japanese in 1945. Today, the stairs are what remain leading to the first TV transmission in Singapore.
In addition to the breathtaking views of Bukit Batok, it was also used as a site for sporting events such as hill climbing. Prominent factories in Singapore were also based in Bukit Batok, including the Ford Motors Factory and Hume Industries. The famous Poh Hin Granite Quarry was also found in the region.
In the early 1960s, the Bukit Batok population mostly lived in temporary structures. This paved the way for a modern housing town in the late 1970s. The government built a total of 1,872 flats for 10,000, which were to be completed in 1978. Following this new development, HDB planned to construct Bukit Batok town under the five-year plan. The town covered 750 ha consisting of 26,000 flats to host about 130,000 residents.
Bukit Batok has also gained from the national public works that aimed to improve the drainage system in 1979. This is why you find that the Bukit Batok area doesn’t flood in rainy seasons, making it the perfect region to own a home. The widening of the Pang Sua River also contributed to alleviating floods in the low-lying areas such as Upper Bukit Timah Road, Bukit Panjang, Woodland Road and Bukit Batok.
